Why is journalism important?
Journalism has the responsibility to share the truth when the world is inundated with unresearched opinions. It’s our job as educators to model un-bias and show students it’s ok to question sources and formulate their own opinions.
What’s the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome as a teacher?
Confrontation…. I wish kids could just be perfect angels all the time so I don’t have to “flip the switch.” I’ve learned that disrespect can be met with honest humanity. Reminding students that I am just as human as they are helps curb the need for the “disciplinarian” version of Mrs. Coker.
Who are your biggest influencers as a teacher?
Everyone one of my peers that I come across becomes an influence of some sort. I love to hear what everyone does in the classroom. It instantly sparks my own creativity!
