How many students are involved in your media program at your school?
My last year (2018-19) we had about 200 in journalism, broadcasting, and the literary magazine.
Most unusual item in/on your desk?
Gifts from students and a large external monitor for my laptop.
Favorite deadline snack?
None. We had to get everything done during class time as this is a magnet school, with a group coming in the morning then another for the afternoon. Students were gone after school.
Favorite journalism-related website?
jeadigitalmedia.org – I learned so much from it, and still do, as a mentor to share with my mentees.
Three words students use to describe you?
Students thought I was respectful, kind, and had “street cred.”
Last great book you read?
“The Girls of Atomic City/The untold story of the women who helped win World War II” by Denise Kiernan
If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would it be?
An endlessly long ocean cruise with lots of port stops along the way.
Why is journalism important?
Society needs a watchdog to keep an eye on those in authority, to expose corruption in high places, and to keep the public informed of current events.
What’s the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome as a teacher?
I’m extremely laid back, so that sometimes was a problem.
Who are your biggest influencers as a teacher?
I don’t recall that I had any in my last 10 years of teaching.
